Jeffrey C. Smith
September 6, 1961 - May 7, 2023
With deep sadness, we announce the death of Jeffrey “Jeff” Smith, of West Chicago, IL, who passed away unexpectedly on May 7, 2023.
Jeff was born in Geneva, IL, to Sandy Povall Smith and the late Owen Smith. In addition to his mother, Jeff is survived by his wife of nearly 21 years, Kris Zimmermann; daughter Morgan (Brendan) Casey; brother Kelly; several extended family members; and two bull terriers, Maggie and Ruby.
Jeff will be remembered for his generosity, wisdom, thoughtfulness, creativity, and humility. He cared deeply for his family and friends and was always happy to help out or offer advice. He took great care of Kris, the dogs, and their 1921 bungalow, and provided a stable foundation in their family that enabled Kris to pursue her goals and dreams.
Jeff was extremely proud of his daughter, Morgan, for her accomplishments. Knowing how much she enjoyed drawing when she was a child, Jeff also loved knowing Morgan was expressing herself through art and he enjoyed seeing her new pieces.
Jeff spent his career working in the printing industry. He was known and well respected for his intelligence, quiet professionalism, and attention to detail.
He also had a wide range of hobbies and interests. He had an extraordinary appreciation for beauty and a curiosity about how things work, which together drove his varied interests. Jeff saw beauty in nature, art, mechanical devices, and old things. He was a talented photographer and had recently returned to film photography using vintage cameras. He particularly enjoyed capturing the beauty of nature, decaying objects and structures, and the convergence of the two subjects. Jeff’s appreciation for beauty also extended to art and antiques. He loved visiting flea markets, antique stores, and estate sales, and particularly loved finding a great deal!
Jeff began riding motorcycles as a young adult, and his love of riding soon extended to bicycling. He particularly loved riding on the open roads. He also participated in competitive cycling for several years. More recently, he enjoyed cycling just for fun, but never lost his desire to chase down the guy ahead of him. Jeff had deep respect for his early cycling mentors and friends, and he made sure to extend this respect to others in the cycling community.
Jeff will be truly missed by all who knew him.
